Deer Park Public Library has been a participating this month in the annual Gulf Coast Reads initiative. The purpose of the program is to bring communities in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast Region together by encouraging residents to read and discuss a chosen book. The 2018 Gulf Coast Reads title is Bluebird Bluebird, by Attica Locke. It is a contemporary mystery set in East Texas featuring Darren Matthews, a black Texas Ranger who goes home to investigate two murders. A rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas, Bluebird Bluebird, is an exhilarating, timely novel about the collision of race and justice in America.
Print copies of the book are available at the Deer Park Public Library, as are Large Print downloadable electronic editions. The library will hosted a book discussion on Tuesday, October 8, 2018, at 6 PM as part of the Mysteries and More Book Club.
Readers can learn more about the blues themes of the book on Thursday, October 25 at 7 PM in the presentation Highway 59 Revisited: The East Texas Blues presented by Steve Davis, Lone Star College.
