Are you a proactive citizen interested in furthering the police-community relationship? Have you ever wondered how police work compares to your favorite crime drama, been curious about what exactly a police officer does, or wanted to learn more about pursuing a career in law enforcement? If so, the Deer Park Police Department has an opportunity for you.
The Deer Park Police Department is currently recruiting citizens for the 37th class of the Citizen’s Police Academy. Classes will begin on Thursday, February 15, 2018 and are held each Thursday from 6:30pm-9:30pm until graduation. Classes generally run for 14 weeks and cover several aspects of police related work.
Previous classes have included interaction between class participants and officers and hands on training on SWAT, DWI procedures, self defense, investigations, communications and many other topics. Past students have listened to audio recordings, watched pursuit videos, investigated mock crime scenes and had numerous questions answered.
Classes are interactive and evolving as more citizens take the initiative to interact with their police department by joining the Citizen’s Police Academy. Prospective students should be 18 years of age with a clear criminal history, willing to attend the entire academy and live, work or attend school in Deer Park.
Graduates are invited to join the Deer Park Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association. Alumni members have continued interaction with the police department in a number of capacities.
There is no fee for the academy. The course is provided free of charge by the Deer Park Police Department in the interest of strengthening police-community bonds and increasing communication between citizens and police department employees. Interested citizens should contact Community Liaison Sheila Plovanich at (281) 930-2118 or splovanich@deerparktx.org.
