[ARCHIVED] The City of Deer Park has activated an American Red Cross shelter at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center

The City of Deer Park has activated an American Red Cross shelter at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, with an estimated 500-700 people expected to arrive within the next several hours.

According to City Manager Jay Stokes, volunteers to assist with the shelter are being coordinated through the City of Deer Park, and no additional public assistance is required at this time.

“It is an incredible testament to the people of this town that we are already seeing a significant number of citizen volunteers to help with the shelter, and we appreciate everyone who is willing to dedicate their time,” he said. “However, because we have already coordinated volunteers for the shelter and we have to keep occupancy levels and parking in mind, we are asking that no additional citizens come to the Jimmy Burke at this time.

“We will of course communicate to the public if the situation changes.”

Please note: The shelter will be housing evacuees previously processed by the Red Cross and will not be capable of accepting walk-up evacuees.
