[ARCHIVED] Internment in America Presentation at Deer Park Library This Thursday Night

The internment of civilians in America during World War II remains controversial. After the Imperial Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order #9066 authorizing the designation of Military Areas for the purpose of exclusion. Both houses of Congress passed Public Law 503 to carry out the enforcement of the order. More than 120,000 people of Japanese descent were relocated to internment camps, along with several thousand individuals of German or Italian descent. The majority of those interned were American citizens.

This program is presented in conjunction with the annual Gulf Coast Reads initiative. A new title is chosen each year to be read and promoted at several libraries in the Houston area. This year, the selected title is The Train to Crystal City by Jan Jarboe Russell. The book is about a family internment camp in Texas during World War II. Readers will learn the stories of the families who lived and worked in the Crystal City camp and the prisoner exchange program that took place during the War. It is the first non-fiction book to be selected for Gulf Coast Reads. The book is available for checkout at the Deer Park Public Library in printed and electronic versions. A discussion of the book will take place at the Library as part of the Mysteries and More Book Club on Tuesday, October 11 at 6:00 PM. More information on Gulf Coast Reads is available at www.gulfcoastreads.org.
