Mark your calendars! The inaugural Deer Park Senior Olympics will be held November 9-13 at the Jimmy Burke Activity Center, and local and regional families are encouraged to take part!
According to Virginia Smith and Scott Lightfoot with the Maxwell Center, the Senior Olympics will include a full range of events including baking, tabletop games and outdoor relays, and all residents age 55 and older are welcome to participate.
Participants will sign up for each individual event they are interested in, with no limit to the number of events and no cost associated with any part of the festivities.
“The Senior Olympics have been a tradition in Harris County Precinct 2 for over 40 years, but the event has always been held in the spring,” Smith said. “We decided to create an event held in the winter to encourage seniors in Deer Park, Pasadena, La Porte and other surrounding areas to participate.
“Whether you would like to participate in a walking relay, a game of bridge or Rumikub, or put your best baked good up against other competitors, we have something for everyone. Come take part in the Winter Olympics and see what you can still do!”
In addition to the senior competitions, a family tug-of-war event will be held on Thursday, November 12 at 7 p.m., in order to encourage the families of Senior Olympics competitors to be a part of the fun.
