[ARCHIVED] Featured Friday: A Discussion of Washington's Farewell Address

Washingtons Farewell

George Washington's advice to future generations as he prepared to leave office - printed in a newspaper, not spoken - was once one of our country's most recognized civic writings, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence.

Today, Washington's Farewell Address is almost forgotten as a public celebration. However, with its 225th anniversary approaching and to kick off Citizenship and Constitution Week, Deer Park Public Library hosts an opportunity to discuss Washington's key messages, what might have prompted him to offer them, and how his words resonate from the hindsight of history.

Join San Jacinto College History Professor Luis Reyes on Friday, September 17 at 11 a.m. at Deer Park Public Library and also via Facebook Live for "Towards the Preservation of Your Government: A Discussion of Washington's Farewell Address." It is the latest installment in the library's Featured Friday series, which offers a variety of lectures and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.

This presentation, taking place in both live and virtual formats, will be a ticketed event with limited seating capacity. Available seating will be socially distanced and masks are requested. Tickets will be available on a first come first serve basis at the reference desk beginning September 13th. Any unclaimed tickets will be available on the day of the event.

For more information, please call the library at 281-478-7208 or email The library is located at 3009 Center St. in Deer Park.
