During the First World War, Ireland fought on two fronts. While Irishmen died by the tens of thousands in the fields of Flanders and the beaches of Gallipoli so that small nations might be free, other Irish men and women launched a revolution seeking freedom at home. Were the men who died on behalf of the British Empire heroes or were they mislead to their fates by a colonial power? And what of those who fought the war at home? The complicated legacy of the First World War still haunts Ireland today, one hundred years later. Come hear Brady Hutchison, history instructor at Wharton County Junior College, talk about Ireland during World War I. His presentation will begin Friday, November 8, 2019 at 11 AM in the library’s meeting room.
This presentation is the latest installment in the library’s Featured Friday series. These monthly programs offer a variety of lectures and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.
