In August 2019, the Battleship Texas closed to visitors during the transfer of operations from Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to the Battleship Texas Foundation and to make final preparations for the ship’s renovation. Join us on September 13 at 11 AM in the library’s meeting room to hear Dr. Abbie Grubb talk about the illustrious career of the USS TEXAS (BB35) from its commissioning in March 1914 to her position in the 21st century.
Dr. Grubb will discuss the ship’s historic naval career including her service in both World Wars and the interwar period as well as her career as a museum and memorial ship at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The presentation will look not only at her military service, but also at her connection with the expanding role of the United States in the early 20th century and her tie to technological advancements that helped shape the modern era.
This presentation is the latest installment in the library’s Featured Friday series. These monthly programs offer a variety of lectures, movies and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. The library is located at 3009 Center St., Deer Park, TX 77536.
