[ARCHIVED] Featured Friday-Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission

FF_ Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission - web

In August 1945, Allied forces dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.  Later that year, President Harry S. Truman authorized the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission “to undertake a long range, continuing study of the biological and medical effects of the atomic bomb on man.”

What was the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and what role did the Texas Medical Center have in preserving the story?  Come hear Philip Montgomery, Head of the McGovern Historical Center, speak on the origins of the ABCC and how Houston played a role in preserving the story. Mr. Montgomery will also examine how the intersection of science and culture can both reinforce and erase divisions that national conflicts often establish.  He will have artifacts from the collection on display.  The presentation will be held August 16 at 11 AM in the library’s meeting room.

This presentation is the latest installment in the library’s Featured Friday series. These monthly programs offer a variety of lectures, movies and special programs of cultural, historical and local interest.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library. No registration is required and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. The library is located at 3009 Center St., Deer Park, TX 77536.
